The art department at the University of California at Davis received a $1 million bequest from alumnus Freemond E. “Pete” Gadberry.
The only stipulation made by Gadberry, who graduated from the art program in 1967, was that the funds benefit art students.
The timing of the gift is fortunate, administrators say, given challenges the department is facing in providing scholarships for talented candidates.
The bequest will be used to create an endowment to help recruit and support new student artists.
Gadberry, who died last year, taught fine arts at Vintage High School in Napa, Calif., until his retirement in 1997.
