Arts supporter Hayes dies

BLOWING ROCK, N.C. – Philanthropist and music lover Mariam Cannon Hayes died August 4. She was 91.

A Concord native, Hayes supported music performance and education throughout North Carolina.

She awarded Appalachian State University in Boone its largest gift ever, $10 million, which was used to endow the school of music named in her honor.

She also served on the boards of the Cannon Foundation and the Charles A. Cannon Charitable Trusts.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University.
