Charlotte philanthropist Belk dies

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – John Montgomery Belk, Charlotte businessman and philanthropist, died August 17.  He was 87.

Belk served as the CEO of Belk Inc. department store company for half a century and was chairman emeritus of the company, founded by his father in 1888.

The former Charlotte mayor was a substantial benefactor of his alma mater, Davidson College, to which he donated $28 million to create a scholarship program bearing his name.

He also served on the school’s board of trustees for 50 years.

Belk was chair of the Belk Foundation and former president of the Presbyterian Hospital Foundations, and held leadership positions in the American Management Association and the Conference Board, among other groups.

Memorial contributions can be made to the John M. Belk Educational Endowment in Charlotte, or to the donor’s charity of choice.
