WILMINGTON, N.C. – The University of North Carolina Wilmington has received a $667,000 grant from the C.D. Spangler Foundation to create an endowed chair in the school’s music department.
The award will be used to establish the Thomas S. Kenan III Distinguished Professor of Jazz, to be filled by a nationally or internationally known jazz musician and teacher who specializes in a rhythm-section instrument.
The university will receive $333,000 in matching funds from North Carolina’s Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund, bringing the endowment to $1 million.
The Kenan professor will hold a series of master classes, public lectures and performances and will assist with the annual Jazz Festival, summer workshops and outreach projects.
