Spangler funds Charlotte Teach for America

 |

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte businessman and former UNC System President C.D. Spangler has donated $4 million to boost teaching in local schools.

The grant from the C.D. Spangler Foundation will allow Teach for America to hire 70 additional teachers to work in high-poverty schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg system over the next two academic years.

The gift is the largest ever to a local affiliate of the national organization, which recruits recent college graduates to serve two-year teaching stints in the nation’s neediest public schools.

The majority of the grant will cover the $20,000 cost of hiring, training and supporting each recruit, with the remaining $1.2 million supporting the operations of the local Teach for America branch.

The investment came days before county residents will vote on $516 million in school bonds, although Spangler, who supports the bond, says the timing of the gift is unrelated.
