Women’s shelter renovated by local church

 |

RALEIGH, N.C. — Homeless women in Raleigh have a newly refurbished place to stay, thanks to the volunteer efforts of a local church.

Raleigh’s Living Word Family Church on Dec. 19 completed renovations, an estimated $50,000 worth of work, on the Helen Wright Center for Women, a shelter located in downtown Raleigh.

The center, run by Urban Ministries of Wake County, now has a repaired roof and ventilation system, new lighting, updated bathrooms, new shelving and cabinetry, a fresh coat of paint inside and out, as well as many other smaller fixes.

The contemporary interracial church undertook the project as part of its Christmas celebration, “UnScrooged, Give Yourself Away.”

Urban Ministries is a nonprofit that aims to meet the basic needs of the county’s low-income residents.
