Email scam targets nonprofits

 |

A new email fraud campaign is luring unsuspecting nonprofits across the U.S. with the promise of foundation grant money.

Sunbelt Software, a Windows security and management software provider, has issued an alert for nonprofits that might be enticed by the new email scam.

The email appears to be sent by a “Barbara Moratek” who claims to be director of grant programs for the “Ivete Foundation” and requests “additional information for prospective donors or volunteers.”

The emails are part of an advance-fee fraud campaign that extracts small sums of money from victims seeking a promised larger gain.

Additionally, searches of “Barbara Moratek” have turned up “malware” sites, software designed to damage computer systems, that are concealed within the search-results lists.

Sunbelt Software, based in Tampa Bay, Fla., was founded in 1994 and provides antispam, antivirus and antispyware solutions.
