Former Cannon Foundation official dies

CONCORD, N.C. — Thomas C. Haywood, former secretary and treasurer of The Cannon Foundation in Concord, died Feb. 10 at his home in Concord. He was 89.

After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in economics, Haywood worked in the accounting department at Cannon Mills in Concord, and later served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He returned to Cannon Mills after the war, and served as personal assistant to Charles A. Cannon, the company’s president and chairman, until Cannon’s death in 1971.

Haywood then joined the trust department at Cabarrus Bank and Trust Co., and served as secretary and treasurer of The Cannon Foundation.

He retired from banking in 1986 as a vice president of Northwestern Bank.
