Facebook users choose Red Cross

As the winner of an online vote among Facebook users, the American Red Cross received a $50,000 grant from the Western Union Foundation through its “Our World Gives” campaign.

Facebook users chose the Red Cross from a pool of eight nonprofits that included Accion USA, CARE, Mercy Corps, Room to Read, U.S. Fund for UNICEF, Opportunity International and World Vision.

The Western Union Foundation has given more than $2 million in grants to these organizations since 2001.

The $50,000 grant will go toward a Red Cross campaign to raise $100 million for disaster-relief efforts. The campaign has raised nearly $70 million since its September launch.

Western Union also offered customers the opportunity to donate to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund at any of its U.S. locations throughout December. 

Since its inception, the foundation has granted nearly $48 million to more than 1,750 nonprofits to promote economic development worldwide.
