Duke University raised $385.7 million in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2008, more than any other college or university in North Carolina, a new report says.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranked second, raising $292.4 million, followed by N.C. State University, which raised $201.9 million.
Duke ranked 12th on the national list of top fundraisers, while UNC-CH ranked 19th, says the Voluntary Support of Education survey, published by the Council for Aid to Education.
The two were the only North Carolina schools to make the top 20 nationally.
While U.S. colleges and universities together raised a record $31.6 billion in the year ending June 30, 2008, up 6.2 percent over 2007, the sector is bracing for possible funding declines in 2009 and 2010, the study says.
Given the stock-market crash, the deep recession and reports of lackluster fundraising results for January of this year, the council says overall giving could decline both this year and next.
