Alexandrians tops in online giving

 |

Among large U.S. cities, Alexandria, Va., is once again the most generous when it comes to online charitable giving, a new study says.

The city led all others with populations over 100,000, reporting online giving of $20,244 per 1,000 people in 2009, followed by Cambridge, Mass., which gave $14,729 per 1,000 people.

The report from Convio examines the online donations it processed during the year from residents of the nation’s 273 largest cities.

Although the recession was in full swing in early 2009, total giving originating from the largest cities grew to more than $284 million last year from $240 million in 2008.

Arlington, Va., ranked third in 2009, with Washington, D.C., and Minneapolis rounding out the top five.

In all, Convio processed more than $921 million in online donations on behalf of thousands of nonprofits during 2009.
