CHARLOTTE, N.C. — With the help of a two-week extension and two 11th-hour $50,000 challenge grants, the Arts & Science Council met the $7.3 million goal for its 2010 annual fund drive.

Co-chaired by Madelyn Caple of Wachovia, a Wells Fargo Company, and Tom Zweng of Presbyterian Healthcare, the campaign began January 26 and was scheduled to end March 15, when it was $1 million short of its goal.

But the campaign was extended to give more individuals the chance to give, and to give more companies the chance to conclude their workplace campaigns.

“Those two weeks made all the difference,” Scott Provancher, council president, says in a statement.

And a week ago, Foundation for the Carolinas and the Leon Levine Foundation each made a $50,000 challenge grant.

A total of over 400 companies participated in workplace campaigns.

For every dollar the council receives, 87 cents support its mission of building appreciation, participation and support for the arts, science, history and heritage in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.
