New foundation will be Minnesota’s biggest

A new charitable foundation with $2.1 billion left by heiress Margaret Cargill is hiring 75 staff members and will be the largest philanthropy in Minnesota, the Star-Tribune in Minneapolis reported April 18 (see Cargill gift story).

Boston Marathon has helped raise over $100 million

The Boston Marathon, which will be run for the 114th time today, is expected generate roughly $11 million for locally-based charities, bringing to over $100 million the total the race has helped raise since 1989, although some estimate that number could really be closer to $150 million, or even $200 million, the Eagle-Tribune in Lawrence, Mass., reported April 18 (see Boston Marathon story).

New group aims to boost British civic societies

Civic Voice, a new charity, has been launched in England to boost the country’s more than 1,000 local groups dedicated to improving their communities, BBC News reported April 17 (see civic society story).
