WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Mary Fant Donnan, a program officer at the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation since 2001, has been named the first full-time executive  director of the Alleghany Foundation in Covington, Va., effective in early January.

Donnan, who was raised in Grayson County, Va., was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for state labor secretary in 2008, and previously was a policy analyst  and director of research and policy at the state Department of Labor.

A former Friday Fellow through the Durham-based statewide Wildacres Leadership Initiative, and a 1996 graduate of Leadership Triangle, she also served as  development director for the North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research and a music teacher in the public schools in Grayson County, Va.

At the Reynolds Foundation, Donnan has primary responsibility for the foundation’s community economic development focus area.

She succeeds Beth Webb, who was part-time executive director at the Alleghany Foundation until her death in December 2009.
