Community funders take hold in Europe

 |

PJ staff report

Community foundations, fairly recent arrivals in Europe, have taken hold during the last decade, a new study says.

From 2000 to 2010, the number of locally-created community foundations in Europe has increased 600 percent to reach 631, says the “2010 Global Status Report on Community Foundation,” released by Worldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker Support.

In Germany alone, the number of community foundations skyrocketed to 240 in 2010 from 10 in 2000.

Worldwide, the number of community foundations has doubled over the past decade, growing to 1,680 from 905.

Some of that growth was driven by community foundations in North America, where the sector grew to 880 from 700 over the last 10 years, but much of that growth took place during the first three years of the decade.

U.S. community foundations hold the bulk of the sector’s assets, 17 times as much as second-place Canada.
