Dec. 14: GM, MacArthur, Alfond, and more

General Motors Foundation will donate $27.1 million to United Way for Southeastern Michigan to create Networks of Excellence from five existing area high schools with goals of dramatically increasing graduation rates and ultimately rebuilding the area’s skilled workforce.


John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation providing $20 million guaranty to attract $100 million for nonprofit developers working to preserve and renovate roughly 20 rental properties throughout U.S. serving over 2,000 low-income residents.


Harold Alfond Foundation committing $10 million to create Harold Alfond Athletics Complex at University of New England campus in Biddeford, Maine,l combined with investment in interprofessional health-care workforce education.


James Irvine Foundation has approved 26 grants totaling over $11.5 million.


MasterCard Foundation and UN Capital Development Fund launched YouthStart, initiative catalyzed by four-year, $12 million contribution from The MasterCard Foundation and designed to increase access to financial services for 200,000 low-income youth in Sub-Saharan Africa.


Oceana awarded two grants from British-based Arcadia Fund, including  $2.55 million over three years to support Oceana’s core costs, and $1 million over two years to fund improvements in marine health in Baltic Sea.
