Dec. 6: SECU, Smart Start, Arts & Science Council, and more

State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation renewing a program, launched in 2003, that provides $10,000 four-year scholarship to graduating senior from each of traditional public high schools and two charter high schools in the state for study at one of 16 campuses in University of North Carolina system; 2011 renewal brings to $28.5 million the total educational funding commitment in North Carolina by SECU members.

Durham’s Partnership for Children, a Smart Start Initiative, teamed with Barnes and Noble Streets at Southpoint for it 2010 book drive Nov. 1 through Dec. 31 that generated  2,865 donated books the partnership will distribute to agencies serving children.

Arts & Science Council, Charlotte, awarded six two-year grants through Duke Energy Science & Environmental Education grant program, including $10,000 to Carolina Raptor Center; $13,000 to Community Charter School; $19,978 to Discovery Place; $15,000 to Eastover Elementary; $12,022 to Highland Mill Montessori Elementary School; and $10,000 to Partners for Parks.
