Milwaukee schools getting $20.4 million from GE Foundation

The GE Foundation is giving $20.4 million over five years to the Milwaukee Public Schools, the biggest single corporate contribution ever to the school district, OnMilwaukee.com reported Jan. 19 (see education gift story).

MacArthur Foundation funds ‘creative and effective’ groups

The MacArthur Foundation is giving grants of up to $1 million to 11 organizations have it has named as recipients of the 2010 “Award for Creative and Effective Institutions,” the Associated Press reported Jan. 18 (see MacArthur grants story).

Walmart Foundation giving $2 million to food banks

The Walmart Foundation, which last May 2010 launched a five-year, $2 billion cash and in-kind commitment to food banks across the U.S., now is giving a total of $2 million to 16 food banks to complete energy-efficiency upgrades on their facilities, a blogger for the Mother Nature Network reported Jan. 18 (see Walmart grants story).

Vermont Symphony Orchestra raises $3.5 million

At a time when cultural organizations across the U.S. are facing tough times, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra raised $3.5 million in a capital campaign, the Associated Press reported Jan. 20 (see symphony fundraising story).
