Assets and grantmaking fall at Ohio foundations

The assets of grantmaking foundations in Ohio fell to an estimated $15.63 billion in 2009 from $18.87 billion in 2007, with the roughly 3,200 foundations in the state giving an estimated $1.22 billion in 2009, compared to $1.29 billion in 2007, the Dayton Daily News reported Feb. 18 (see Ohio foundations story).

Donations up or flat in Oregon, Southwest Washington

A new survey on charitable donations to nonprofits in Oregon and Southwest Washington finds 45 percent of respondents reported either great or modest increases in funding in 2010, compared with 2009, with 29 percent reporting contributions remained the same and 25 percent saying they fell modestly or greatly, The Oregonian reported Feb. 18 (see Oregon giving story).

Pittsburgh Foundation launching online-news venture

The Pittsburgh Foundation plans to launch an online news venture in June to focus on reporting of in-depth, regional issues with the nonprofit effort funded with a $253,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in Miami, and $325,000 from the Pittsburgh Foundation, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Feb. 18 (see online news story).

School of art and design gets $2 million endowment gift

The Moore College of Art & Design has received $2 million from the chairman o of its board and her husband, the school’s largest endowment gift ever, bringing the size of the endowment to $12 million, The Philadelphia Business Journal reported Feb. 16 (see endowment gift story).
