Connectinc, a nationally honored nonprofit in Battleboro that connects unemployed people with support services to help them help themselves, is the target of an investigation by the Financial Crimes Unit of the State Bureau of Investigation, The New & Observer in Raleigh reported March 29.
Also under investigation, says a spokeswoman for the state Department of Justice, is Jackie Savage, the nonprofit’s president.
Savage and Kevin Zimmer, the group’s interim executive director, did not return phone calls from the newspaper.
David Bruton, chairman of the group’s board, told the newspaper he had been instructed not to comment on the investigation until it is complete.
Connectinc, based about 50 miles east of Raleigh, employs about 50 people and has received funds from a variety of sources, including contracts with the state, the Golden Leaf Foundation, J.B. Reynolds Foundation and Annie E. Casey Foundation.
