Greensboro Urban Ministry has seem big rise in demand for its emergency assistance program, which provided $33,447 in April for 112 families needing help with rent, mortgage or utility assistance; $40,996 in May for 153 families; $47,580 in June for 199 families; and $19,745 through July 19 for 86 families.

University of North Carolina School of the Arts laying off employees, eliminating vacant positions, reducing operating costs and cutting unallocated reserves to address reduction of $2.97 million, or 10.8 percent, in school’s $27.8 million state appropriation for fiscal 2011-12.
