Peter J. Goldberg, president and CEO of the Families International group of companies, died unexpectedly Aug.12 while on vacation in Maine.

A resident of Mequon, Wisc., Goldberg had served as president and CEO of Families International since 1994, and also was president and CEO of the Alliance for Children and Families, CEO of United Neighborhood  Centers of America, and CEO of Ways to work.

Families International named Stephen Mack, chair of the board of the Alliance for Children and Families, its interim CEO and launched a national search for a new CEO.

The former president of the Prudential Foundation and head of Primerica’s foundation and its social-responsibility programs, Goldberg also served as a board trustee of The Bridgespan Group; chair of the advisory committee of the Listening Post Project at the Center for Civil Society Studies at Johns Hopkins University; and convening chair of Leadership 18, a group consisting of major national nonprofit human-services organizations in the U.S.
