Cumberland Community Foundation, Fayetteville, paid 857 grants totaling $2.86 million in 2011, highest number of grants since its founding in 1980 and up from 839 grants totaling $2.31 million in 2010; total assets at Dec. 31, 2011, were $56 million, up from $42 million a year earlier.

North Carolina Community Foundation, Raleigh, awarded nearly $829,000 in scholarships and educational grants for 2011-12 academic year, including $610,929 representing 332 scholarships to 291 students across the state, and $217,779 in grants to educational institutions to use for awarding scholarships.

North Carolina New Schools Project, Raleigh, raised $165,000 from Duke Energy, ABB Inc., and North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives to match second $50,000 installment of three-year challenge grant from Progress Energy.

YWCA Greater Triangle, Raleigh, received $50,000 one-year grant from Avon Foundation for Women’s Breast Health Outreach Program to increase awareness of benefits of early detection of breast cancer and to provide free screening.

Beehive Collective, Raleigh, gave $20,000 grant to WakeUP Wake County, for public-education campaign to support sales-tax referendum to fund public transit.

John Rex Endowment, Raleigh, issued requests for proposals for capacity-building grants, and for grants to support healthy-weight initiatives for Wake County children.

Homes By Vanderbuilt, Sanford, made $2,500 gift to US Marines Toys-For-Tots Foundation.

Fayetteville Technical Community College awarded grant from The Walmart Foundation to improve services to – and promote volunteerism by – the military community.
