The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra received a gift of $50,000 from the estate of Nancy H. McAllister, the largest gift to its endowment in its 42 year history. The gift endows the orchestra’s concertmaster chair in perpetuity and will be recognized by the designation “Concertmaster Chair Endowed in Memory of Nancy H. McAllister.”
Kohl’s associates will volunteer at Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill, cleaning up the grounds, refreshing landscaping and beautifying the location for families who travel for their child’s medical treatment at local area hospitals. Kohl’s will also donate $14,500 to the organization in recognition of the volunteer efforts as part of the company’s fourth annual National Go Green Event in celebration of National Volunteer Week and Earth Day.
The Hispanic League will announce 34 scholarships to local Hispanic/Latino students at the 14th annual Spanish Nite Scholarship Awards Gala on Saturday, April 20. The Hispanic League presents $2,000 annual scholarships that are funded by individual and corporate and has awarded $335,000 scholarships since 2000. Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont announced Catherine Thacker as the council’s equine/assistant program manager at the Keyauwee Program Center, located in Sophia. Before joining the council, Thacker worked for nine years at the Triad’s nonprofit therapeutic riding center, Horsepower. Thacker was an active Girl Scout for many years, earning her Girl Scout Gold Award with the Tarheel Triad Legacy Council.
Capital Development Services, a fundraising consulting and executive search firm, announced Betsy Bennett as new strategic counsel. Bennett brings significant leadership experience to the firm, most recently as the director of the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, and formerly with the Triangle Children’s Museum and with Discovery Place in Charlotte.
The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina received a 2013 Excellence in Food Banking Award for Food Access at the annual Feeding America Network Executive Directors’ Forum held April 9-10 in Nashville. The award is given to the year’s most outstanding food access program from the 202 food banks in national the Feeding America network. Judges awarded the distinction to the Food Bank for its “Fairshare” program. Peter Werbicki, president, accepted a plaque and a $2,500 award on behalf of the organization.
Raleigh Hall of Fame is a nonprofit organization that recognizes nonprofit organizations which have made significant contributions to the City of Raleigh. Its 2013 inductees include the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce and The Salvation Army of Wake County. Inductees will be honored at a gala dinner and presentation on Oct. 7 at the Raleigh Convention Center.
The Statistical and Applied Mathematical Science Institute will present a Simons Foundation Public Lecture featuring Francesca Dominici, professor of biostatistics in the Harvard School of Public Health and associate dean of information technology, at 7 p.m. April 24 at the UNC Friday Center in Chapel Hill. The Junior League of Raleigh’s Bargain Box thrift store will hold its fourth annual Drop & Shop from Friday through Sunday. Shoppers are encouraged to donate five items of gently used clothing at one of the “drop” tables in shops and restaurants located throughout Cameron Village in Raleigh. In return, they’ll receive a 20 percent off coupon good for one item at a participating business. Donations help the Bargain Box raise funds to support the Junior League of Raleigh’s community projects. Shoppers may drop off donated clothing from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Reading Connections will host its 13th annual VF Corporation Scrabble Challenge benefiting the adult literacy program. The event will feature food and prizes and will be held from 6-9 p.m. April 30 at the West Market Street United Methodist Church, 302 West Market St., Greensboro.
