The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven and donor-centered charity dedicated to funding childhood cancer research, announced more than $22 million in funding for pediatric cancer research grants. A complete list of institutions receiving grants is available online.
The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, a provider of need-based scholarships to military children, announced a record number of awards at its annual National Scholarship Announcement Ceremony in Washington, D.C. The awards total more than $6.5 million in scholarship funding to 2,040 children of Marines and Navy corpsmen during the 2013-14 academic year.
The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation announced grants totaling $3.7 million for the institutions of the Flint Cultural Center. The one-year general operating grants include: $1.5 million to the Flint Cultural Center Corporation; $1.5 million to the Flint Institute of Arts; and $700,000 to the Flint Institute of Music.
The Northwest Area Foundation awarded 27 grants totaling $3.3 million in its second quarter of 2013. The grants will fund projects to stimulate economic opportunities in Native American tribal communities.
Recover Alaska, a statewide collaboration of funding organizations, announced a $154,000 award to Anchorage Daily News to support a year-long journalistic investigation of the human and financial costs of alcohol abuse in Alaska. The award is made through the Recover Alaska Media Project Fund at the Alaska Community Foundation.
WorldVentures Foundation, the philanthropic arm of WorldVentures, a direct seller of vacation club memberships, has donated more than $100,000 to Hug It Forward, a grass-roots organization that facilitates education and awareness by empowering communities to build schools.

Outdoors For All, a nonprofit organization devoted to helping individuals with disabilities participate in outdoor sports and activities, has been selected the winner of a national essay competition. The contest was sponsored by Mitch-Stuart Inc., a company that provides no-risk travel packages and activities to nonprofits for fundraising purposes. Outdoors for All will use the first-place prize of a four-day, three-night stay at any Marriott property in the world for fundraising efforts.
At a conference co-sponsored by the Center for Strategic International Studies and the National Guard Youth Foundation, leaders spotlighted the Youth ChalleNGe program as a proven model that addresses the high school dropout rate. ChalleNGe is a 17-month education and workforce development program that culminates in high school graduation or attainment of a GED. The program is projected to see its largest graduation class this year, its 20th year, with more than 9,000 youth receiving their high school diplomas, GED certificates or returning to high school.
The Rollins Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership Center announced the findings of its 2013 Nonprofit Compensation and Benefits Report. The mGive Foundation, a nonprofit supporting U.S. mobile donation campaigns, released its annual mGive Text Donation Study, a survey of text donors. The survey’s findings demonstrate both the durability of text donations and the growing integration between social media and text-based communication between nonprofits and their donors.

The Kids In Need Foundation, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free school supplies to economically disadvantaged school children and under-funded teachers, launched its 2013 teacher grants program. Teachers can visit the Kids In Need Foundation website to apply for grants ranging from $100 to $500 to conduct classroom projects. This year pre-K teachers can also apply for funding. The deadline for submission of grant applications is Sept. 30. Grant awards are based on the creativity of the projects being proposed.
World Hope International, a Christian relief and development organization working with vulnerable communities worldwide, kicked off its second annual “Freedom Sundays” program, a month-long campaign that is designed to shine a light on human trafficking. Freedom Sundays provides an avenue for justice-seekers and churches across the country to raise awareness within their congregations and communities throughout the month of July. Salsa Labs Inc. (Salsa), creator of the nonprofit platform to grow and engage a base of online support, is partnering with #GivingTuesday for a webinar providing nonprofit organizations tips on how they can secure additional year-end funds by adding #GivingTuesday (the nonprofit equivalent of Black Friday) to their marketing mix. Nonprofits can register for the webinar online, which will be held at 2 p.m. July 24.
QVC, whose community affairs efforts support the success and wellness of women through the power of relationships, will give customers the opportunity to shop for a cause during its “QVC Presents Super Saturday LIVE” event at 2 p.m. July 27. Viewers will be able to purchase select items at half the manufacturer’s suggested retail price with net proceeds benefitting Ovarian Cancer Research Fund’s research grants and its Woman to Woman program.
Community Funded, a crowdfunding platform, launched the My5 contest posing the question, “What would you do with $5,000 to make your world a better place?” To be eligible for the My5 contest, users must submit their project by July 31 online. Starting Aug. 1, project creators will spread the word about their idea within their community, who will be encouraged to show their support by endorsing the project. The top five most endorsed projects will be announced Aug. 15 and credited the appropriate winnings to kick-off their fundraising. All projects with 50 or more endorsements will go live Aug.15, giving project creators 30 days to raise the money needed to launch their idea.
Qgiv, an online and mobile donation solutions, released the Qgiv Contextual Giving Platform, a digital platform that empowers fundraising across any context – including mobile, online and in-person kiosk fundraising. The company also unveiled its new Text Giving and Mobile Virtual Terminal solutions.
