Wake County Salvation Army

Team Members from the BJ’s Membership Club in Raleigh donated $2,500 worth of product to The Salvation Army of Wake County to help with the charity’s food assistance program. The donation is in response to an announcement by The Salvation Army that their shelves were empty, and they would be suspending their food assistance program indefinitely.

On Saturday, April 18th, WomenNC was awarded the Duke Women’s Center’s first annual WomC Award for outstanding contributions to the North Carolina community.  This award recognizes efforts contributing to the efficacy of girls and women and/or addressing the challenges and issues girls and women face through research, programming and/or services.

The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) recently honored its top area blood drive hosts and donors from 2014 in the second of two appreciation banquets. Glenn Johnson – Taylorsville; and Terry Rennaker – North Wilkesboro touched up to 21 lives each through blood donation.

The Rev. Myron W. Wilkins, trained social worker and minister, will become the new executive director of Greensboro Urban Ministry. Read more.

Ophthalmologists in the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine are participating in the National Service Dog Eye Exam program and will be offering free eye examinations to qualified working or service dogs throughout May. Among the conditions being checked are redness, squinting, cloudy corneas, retinal disease, early cataracts and other abnormalities.

The Lucy Daniels Center will hold its ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating its new Therapeutic Teaching Garden on May 2.  It will also celebrate the volunteers and various partnerships that made the garden possible. For more, click here.

Saturday, May 2nd, May Lupus Foundation Support Group of Surry County will meet for its monthly group meeting hosted by the Lupus Foundation of America, North Carolina Chapter. Read more.

The Durham Arts Council and Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau have partnered with EverWondr, an online events network, to offer Durham Culture, DCVB’s online arts calendar which provides listings of arts and cultural events in Durham.

Arts NC will be hosting Arts Day on May 19th and 20th, an annual initiative aimed at keeping North Carolina a creative state. The two day event will feature a mini conference on day one and legislative day on day two. Click here to read more.

The Junior Woman’s Club of Raleigh is hosting their biggest fund raising effort of the year, the 3rd Annual Stock Your Cellar Wine Raffle, on April 21, 2015 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Mia Francesca Trattoria at North Hills. The event will donate the money raised to local charities. Read more.

WomenNC held their UNA Wake Dinner on Saturday April 18th. WomenNC 2015 student fellows discussed their reflections from their recent trip to New York City where they participated in the 59th conference of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). For more, click here.

The Special Event Company partnering with Teen Cancer America in producing TCA on-tour fundraising activities and fan-based fundraising events for The Who Hits 50! US tour. It kicked off on April 15 in Tampa, Fla., The Who Hits 50! tour is dedicating fundraising efforts and a portion of ticket sales to Teen Cancer America, an organization founded by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, which supports the treatment of teenagers and young adults with cancer.

Dentistry From The Heart Event, which provides adults with free dental care on, held a local event on Saturday, April 18th in Cary, NC. Dr. Allan M. Acton hosted the event. Learn more.

Durham’s Partnership for Children (the Partnership), a Smart Start Initiative, will host its 20th Anniversary celebration at the Museum of Life and Science on Thursday, April 23rd.

Teach For America – Eastern North Carolina (TFA ENC) celebrated 25 years on April 18th with its 3rd Annual Policy, Advocacy and Community Engagement (PACE) Summit in which teachers and Teach For America alumni gathered for a variety of lectures and workshops led by community partners and industry experts to develop as educators and deepen their understanding of local context and history.
