Durham’s Partnership for Children, a Smart Start Initiative, will serve 105 additional children in the 2015-16 school year through the NC Pre-Kindergarten and Durham Early Head Start programs. Funding for the increase in slots comes from the North Carolina Division of Child Development and Early Education and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through the Administration for Children and Families, respectively.
The Emily K Center is one of ten local nonprofit organizations recognized by GlaxoSmithKline with an IMPACT award of $40,000 for doing work that is innovative and transformational and is making the community better.
State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) members via the SECU Foundation have teamed up with the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency to help Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership (The Housing Partnership) address the lack of affordable housing for low-income military veterans and their families. The Housing Partnership received a no-interest construction loan of $600,000 from the SECU Foundation to build Tyvola Crossing Phase II, a 20 unit apartment complex, the first supportive housing development of its kind in Charlotte designated for area veterans in need.

On Saturday, November 28th, The Mint Museum Uptown will open “New York to Nebo: The Artistic Journey of Eugene Thomason,” an exhibition of the artist’s work owned by The Johnson Collection.
The Salvation Army of Wake County registered just over 8,000 children to be a part of the Christmas Cheer Program, where children in need will receive toys, stockings, and clothing. The Angel Tree program is a part of the umbrella program, Christmas cheer. By adopting children through the Angel Tree, donors are specifically providing new clothing for that child.
Triangle Family Services’ 13th Annual Gingerbread Auction opened on November 24th. All proceeds from the auction will benefit Triangle Family Services.
On Thursday, November 26th, the Durham Rescue Mission hosted their annual Thanksgiving community dinner with the help of over 500 volunteers. In additional to the traditional Thanksgiving meal, the Mission provided groceries, clothing and carnival fun for families and children.
DHIC welcomes two new staff members to their team: Ms. LaTonya McKoyand Ms. Kayla Rosenberg. LaTonya joined the DHIC team as the Community Services Coordinator. Kayla joined DHIC’s team as the Multifamily Project Manager.
Fayetteville Technical Community College announced that Tamara Bryant was awarded the Director of the Year by the North Carolina Community College System – Small Business Center Network.
