Crescent Communities will donate 4.5 acres of land to Foundation For The Carolinas for the construction of affordable housing within The River District in west Charlotte. The gift, valued at $2 million, is the first of its kind as part of the Foundation-led effort to raise $50 million from the private sector to address Charlotte’s affordable housing crisis.

Duke University’s Center for the History of Political Economy received a $5 million grant from the Charles Koch Foundation. The Center will use the funds to expand upon their work by adding faculty, continuing its commitment to visiting students and scholars, and partnering with Duke’s Rubenstein Library to hire a digital librarian.

The Craven County Community Foundation awarded $177,020 in local grant awards from the community grantmaking fund and local component funds: the Richard Chapman Cleve Fund, Nelson Family Memorial Endowment Fund, Harry and Virginia Killian Charitable Endowment and Brian Fisher Endowment.

Durham Arts Council announced the winners of thirty two Season Grant Program Grants and six Durham Arts Catalyst Grants on August 23rd.

The Durham Rescue Mission received a $250,000 challenge, which must be met by December 31, 2018, to help the Mission get new donors and/or activate those who haven’t given in two years.

Blue Devil hoops legend and Duke University Director of Basketball Operations Nolan Smith hosted the second annual Teen Cancer America Hoop-a-thon fundraiser in Durham on Sunday, August 26 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Guilford Green has merged the Foundation Board and the LGBTQ Center Board to better reflect their shared identity and mission to unite the community through programming and philanthropy. They welcome new 2018-2019 Board Members Summer Foster, Cecil Brockman, and Steve Stonecypher.

Durham Rescue Mission‘s Back-to- School Pep Rally and Backpack Give-away took place August 23rd.

Guilford Green’s Gay & Gray Movie Night took place on August 28th.

SHIFT NC CEO Traci L. Baird, MPH, will leave her position at SHIFT NC to lead EngenderHealth. Bethann West James, JD, will serve as Interim CEO starting September 24.

The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and Saints of Paint will host Of Valley & Ridge: A Scenic Journey through the Blue Ridge Parkway on October 26th.

Isabella Santos Foundation will host a charity gala to support Atrium Health’s Levine Children’s Hospital on October 26th.

The Durham Arts Council’s 44 annual Centerfest will take place September 15 and 16 in downtown Durham.

ENC Stop Human Trafficking’s biggest fundraiser of the year, Bluegrass, BBQ & Brew, will take place October 12th at Brock’s Farm in Winterville.

The Piedmont Laureate Program, co-sponsored by the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, Durham Arts Council, Orange County Arts Commission, and United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, is now accepting applications for the Piedmont Laureate 2019 – Creative Non-Fiction.
