The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources has been awarded a grant by the National Park Service to renovate a 1920’s rail car built to comply with Jim Crow laws that is now at the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer. The $287,442 grant will fund renovation of a car which has not been used since 1969. Once renovated, the rail car will allow museum staff to contextualize segregation during the Golden Age of Railroading and its inherent inequities.
Golden Corral raised more than $2 million this year to help support Camp Corral, a nonprofit corporation that provides free, one-of-a-kind summer camp experiences for children of wounded, injured, ill or fallen service members.

Durham Technical Community College broke ground on its new Applied Technologies building at an event on Friday, October 4th. The over-40,000-square-foot building will serve as home to various programs, including Architectural Technology, Software Development, Web Development, Network Security, and Electronics Engineering Technology.
Caitlin Burke will join the staff of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation as a program officer in January 2020. The role of the program officer includes developing effective strategies for the Foundation to facilitate positive change, analyzing grant applications, helping develop organizational capacity and evaluating the effectiveness of the Foundation’s past grantees.
The Benson Foundation for the Arts kicked off their 20th anniversary season with The Odd Couple, which opened Saturday, October 12th at the W.J. Barefoot Auditorium in Benson.

The Triangle Health Project‘s 2019 Red Ribbon Run & AIDS Walk will take place November 16th. Registration and opening ceremonies begin at 2:30 pm. The run/walk kicks off at 3:30 pm at Joymongers Brewing Company in Greensboro.
The Barnabas Network will host its Fall Warehouse Furniture Sale Fundraiser on Saturday, October 19th from 9 am – 3 pm, and Sunday, October 20th from noon – 3 pm at the Executive Square Shopping Center in Greensboro.
